Gallery Four - The Deck Of Cards.
In 1976, Christian Neffe of the JPL Gallery, Bond Street, London,W1, had the idea of commissioning 54 British artists to produce one playing card image each. He would allot the particular card to the artist and the finished set would be shown at his gallery. The whole set was purchased by Andrew Jones who then had them published as a pack of playing cards and as large posters. He toured the paintings extensively, and the Cards are still on sale wordwide.
At the time, they were very well received and the critic Marina Vaizey descibed them as "a little survey of British art that you could pack, more or less, in a briefcase.

I was allotted the 7 of clubs and did extensive research on the various meanings associated with "seven", like the "Seven Sleepers Awake" and the "Seven Wonders of the World ", etc. The imagary was drawn from the view through my kitchen window, and developed through a number of different versions, which is exactly the way that I normally work.
