JOHN
SPENCE • artist • musician |
|
Spence has put many years of curiosity and experimentation into his work
in attempting to create visual metaphors that evoke vivid atmospheres
of place and emotions. These are often quirky, sometimes disturbing and
many because of their small scale, tend to have a jewel-like quality.
The resulting paintings and drawings are a form of improvisation, having
much in common with jazz where a theme is taken up many times and different
contexts, to illuminate and enrich it, and to convey the excitement of
discovery of something new.
The work is in oils, pencil, mixed media including print, and a number
of combinations, and most of the work is on paper. Limited edition prints
are also available, see the SALES page.
John also plays double bass in two bands at present, whose web addresses
and details are on the CONTACT and LINKS pages.
